What Niacin is

Niacin is vitamin B3, and it is genuinely essential: without enough of it people develop pellagra, a deficiency disease with skin, gut and neurological signs that was common in parts of the world within living memory.

Its work inside cells runs through two coenzymes, NAD and NADP. Almost every reaction that moves energy around a cell uses one of them, which is why niacin turns up in the phrase cellular energy on so many labels. That much is real biochemistry rather than marketing.

Two forms are sold. Nicotinic acid causes the well-known flush — a hot, red prickling across the face and chest — at higher doses. Nicotinamide does not. The MemoClear label says niacin and gives the amount in NE, niacin equivalents.

What MemoClear declares

MemoClear declares niacin at 7.5 mg NE, which the panel puts at 47% of the daily value. It is the only entry on this label with a percentage worth discussing, and it is a real nutritional contribution.

For context, the recommended intake for adults is about 16 mg NE a day for men and 14 for women, so one capsule covers a useful share of a whole day before you have eaten anything.

NE stands for niacin equivalents, a unit that counts both the niacin itself and the small amount your body can make from the amino acid tryptophan. Sixty milligrams of tryptophan count as one milligram of niacin equivalents.

Where it comes from in food

Chicken and turkey breast, tuna and salmon, beef and liver, peanuts, brown rice and fortified breakfast cereals. Your body can also make a little niacin from the amino acid tryptophan, which is what the NE unit accounts for.

Questions

Niacin: common questions

No. The flush people associate with niacin comes from nicotinic acid in doses of tens or hundreds of milligrams, far above what is in a capsule.

Niacin equivalents. It counts niacin itself plus the niacin your body can make from tryptophan, at a rate of 60 mg of tryptophan to 1 mg NE.

Most people do. Chicken and turkey breast, tuna, salmon, beef, peanuts, brown rice and fortified cereals are all good sources.
