L-Citrulline HCL in MemoClear

One hundred milligrams of citrulline as a hydrochloride salt. It is the ingredient that quietly does arginine's job better than arginine.

What L-Citrulline HCL is

Citrulline is an amino acid your body makes and uses, though it is not one of the twenty that build protein. It takes its name from citrullus, the Latin for watermelon, where it was first identified.

Here is the interesting part. When you swallow arginine, much of it is destroyed before it reaches your bloodstream. Citrulline is not: it passes through the gut and liver largely untouched, reaches the kidney, and is converted there into arginine. Gram for gram, swallowed citrulline raises blood arginine more reliably than swallowed arginine does.

That is why a formula built around nitric oxide would carry both, as this one does. The hydrochloride part is simply an acid salt that keeps the powder stable and easy to work with.

What MemoClear declares

MemoClear declares L-citrulline HCL at 100 mg per capsule, with no daily value established, and declares the malate form separately at another 100 mg.

Taken together with the two arginine entries, that gives the capsule four separate printed amino acid amounts working on the same pathway rather than one number standing in for all of them.

A wedge of watermelon, for comparison, supplies a few hundred milligrams of citrulline depending on ripeness and how close to the rind you eat.

Where it comes from in food

Watermelon is the famous one, with the rind holding more than the flesh. Cucumber, pumpkin, bitter melon and other gourds contain it too, in amounts that vary a great deal with ripeness and variety.

Questions

L-Citrulline HCL: common questions

They are different amino acids, but the body converts citrulline into arginine in the kidney. Citrulline survives digestion better, which is why it is often the more practical way to raise arginine levels.

It makes a stable, easily measured powder. It is a manufacturing choice rather than an active ingredient.

Watermelon is the best-known source, particularly the pale flesh near the rind. Cucumber, pumpkin and other gourds contain some too.
