Calcium in MemoClear

Eighteen milligrams as calcium carbonate, which the panel puts at 1.5% of the daily value. The honest reading of that number is worth a page.

What Calcium is

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body and almost all of it is in bone and teeth. The small remainder does a great deal of work: muscles contract with it, nerves signal with it, and blood clots with it.

Calcium carbonate is the form declared here. It is chalk, essentially — the same compound as limestone and eggshell — and it is the cheapest and most compact way to put calcium into a tablet or capsule.

In a capsule of this size, calcium carbonate also does a mechanical job. It is a common bulking and flow agent, which is a perfectly ordinary thing for a manufacturer to need. The label declares it either way, which is more than some do.

What MemoClear declares

MemoClear declares calcium at 18 mg, or 1.5% of the daily value. It is the smallest declared contribution on the panel, and the carton does not ask you to buy the product for it.

What the entry shows is a label being complete. A less careful manufacturer would leave a 1.5% ingredient off the panel altogether or fold it into the other ingredients line. This one prints it with its own figure and its own percentage, which is the same courtesy it extends to all seven.

Where it comes from in food

Dairy, tinned fish with the bones in, tofu set with calcium, kale, broccoli and fortified plant drinks. An ordinary glass of milk carries roughly sixteen times what one MemoClear capsule declares.

Questions

Calcium: common questions

A small amount, and the panel says so plainly with its 1.5% figure. Adults are generally advised to take in around 1,000 mg a day, mostly from food.

At this amount it is most likely serving as a bulking or flow agent inside the capsule. Calcium carbonate is a standard, inexpensive excipient.

It is the most compact and least expensive form of calcium, which is why it turns up so often in capsules and tablets. It is the same compound as chalk and eggshell.
